AGC goes 'Gatsby' for third-annual Anchorage casino party

AGC of Alaska declared its third-annual AGC Dinner & Casino Night, held Feb. 16 in Anchorage, a sound success. The night’s theme was “The Great Gatsby,” proving there are all kinds of Casino Nights in the world but never the same Casino Night twice (with apologies to F. Scott Fitzgerald).

The evening featured food, drinks, entertainment and music from the 1920s. Ladies donned beaded flapper dresses and feathered or beaded headbands and arrived on the arms of gents wearing dapper tuxedos or more understated three-piece suits. One would-be gangster even arrived with a Tommy gun, but it proved to be a prop and was considered party-safe.

  • Eighteen board and committee members attended as dealers, entertainers or bartenders.
  • A specialty bar featured choices of an old fashioned, a mint julep or a gin rickey, all made on the spot by Kelly and Lisa Layman.
  • 1920s picnic fare was served: ham with apricot bourbon glaze, Gruyere scalloped potatoes, Waldorf salad and deviled eggs, followed by New York cheesecake with Reese’s peanut butter cup candy.
  • Josef Princiotta, an expert in nonverbal communication, discussed with guests the unspoken messages their body language was conveying.
  • Guests won and lost fortunes on blackjack, craps and Texas hold ’em tables.
  • Special thanks to all the AGC board and committee members who attended and helped make the evening a roaring success.
